A few highlights:
- Somewhere between 500 billion and 1 trillion bags are consumed a year.
- Less than 10% are recycled (although I'm sure that many get reused)
- It costs more to recycle the bags than the resulting product is worth: $4000 to recycle, $32 worth of usable raw material.
- Most of the bags end up in the ocean.
